OPTIMISM – A KEY TO HEALTHY LIVING

One of the greatest advantage we have as humans is the mind. Sadly, most individuals do not understand how it works hence making it a disadvantage.

Delving into our subject today, optimism is the belief that good will eventually triumph over evil. Phrases like “we go dey alright ”, “we’ll be fine at the end”, “every cloud has a silver lining”, “every disappointment is a blessing” capture the essence of optimism.

“she just started a business which requires a lot of time, but have to remain a good mum and wife to her family. Sarah was torn between two worlds; business and family”

Sarah would be an optimist if she sees this as an opportunity to learn balance which will eventually help her out in other aspect of life. On the other hand, Sarah would be a pessimist if she believes that either of the two will become a problem. Eventually, she will lose her business to focus on family (which sounds sensible to most people) or vice versa. But is it really a wise choice?

I’ll be sharing few tips on how to stay positive.

Challenge Your Negative Thinking

Daily, try as much as possible to listen to your thoughts. You’d be amazed how you’ll catch yourself thinking a meal will come out bad while cooking or you will fall while trying to learn a skill and so on. Whenever you find yourself doing this, question your thoughts. Tell your mind what to think.

Listen To Good Music

You have total control of your mind. It is only subject to the thoughts you permit. If you want to try it, start your day by listening to sad songs. You’ll find out that for the rest of the day you’ll be sad. This is simply because music affect the region of the brain that releases emotional chemicals.
Serotonin – the happy neurotransmitter
Dopamine – a chemical for motivation
Norepinephrine – fight or flight response.
What happens whenever you’re sad is that the brain sees no need to release these happy chemicals because your mind has been poisoned!!!

Smile

As trivialized as this is, it is extremely important. Feedbacks sent to the brain from facial muscles impact emotional development. So smile, it helps!

Share Positivity

There are several ways to do this. It could be by sending a text to someone you just thought of or by getting a random gift for someone whose love language is gifts.

Have Fun

Do those things you feel excited about. If you feel a sense of meaning in your life, you’ll be healthier, live longer and have a greater life satisfaction.

Meditation

Most people find this difficult because they wonder how to fit it into their already busy schedule. If you are an extremely busy person, start with an informal mindfulness practice. This can be during your lunch time, once you’re done eating take at least 5 minutes to slowly inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth as you reflect on your life, then do this as much as time permits. On the other hand, if you have a very free schedule, you can take at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of your time to relax and meditate.

Try including these tips into your life and I’m confident you’ll see how positivity overweighs negativity.

Thanks.
